Enrollment in Kindergarten

A child must reach the age of five on or before July 31stof the calendar year to be enrolled in kindergarten. The school district will enroll a child who will reach the age of five between August 1stand October 15thof the year of enrollment if the parent or guardian requests such enrollment and provides an affidavit stating:

(a) the child attended kindergarten in another jurisdiction in the current school year; or

(b) the family anticipates relocating to another jurisdiction that would allow admission within the current year; or

(c) the child has demonstrated through recognized assessment procedures approved by the board that he or she is capable of performing the work of kindergarten.

The recognized assessment procedure approved by the board is a norm-referenced test yielding standard scores, individually administered by a qualified individual.

The board delegates to the elementary principal responsibility for determining whether the conditions of this policy have been met. In order to enroll in kindergarten early, students must achieve a score of at least 2 standard deviations above the mean.
