Prairie View's 3rd, 4th and 5th graders gave a packed Auditorium something to smile about at last Thursday's PE/Music Fun Night.

In addition to performances from the students selected for the Sing Across Nebraska and the Nebraska All-State Choirs, the students sang songs keeping with the "Poitive Thoughts" theme.   Each grade also performed a square dance (3rd grade) or line dance (4th and 5th grades).

Vocal and instrumental students competed in the contest.
On Saturday, March 24th, Ogallala Public Schools hosted the annual Ogallala Middle School Music Contest.  This contest is for students in 5th grade through 8th grade.  Students can enter events in vocal, instrumental, and piano.  They can do solos or ensembles.  This year, 147 entries from 5 area schools and Ogallala  competed for three judges, receiving positive and helpful critiques to help the students grow as musicians.

The contest was a very successful event- Mrs. Kammerer wants to thank all who helped and competed!

What was different about the way Elvis danced?  "He was dancing weird and all the girls would scream," said one fifth grade boy, before standing and demonstrating.

On Wednesday, Mrs. Kammerer's 5th grade students had the opportunity to learn about four rock and roll pioneers by interacting with the experts- the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  A grant from the John Applegate Fund enabled the students to take a "virtual" field trip to Cleveland, Ohio.  The field trip was featured this weekend on KNOP-TV: http://bit.ly/w0mKvU

In a live session with one of the Hall of Fame's classroom specialists, they examined the impact of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard through the lens of technology, teenage culture and race relations.  They viewed video clips, like that of Elvis' TV debut on the Milton Berle show, watched Jerry Lee Lewis in the opening credits of "Blackboard Jungle," and compared the Little Richard and Pat Boone performances of "Tutti Frutti."

For these students, America in the 1950's is hard to imagine; learning about the history of rock and roll helps them understand the era a little better.

The 5th Grade presented their Winter musical, "Santa's Holiday Playlist," on December 20th in the OHS Lecture Hall for a capacity crowd.

In the musical, Santa's recorder player and recorders are wearing out.  He isn't sure of "upods, mpz's and all of that crazy high tech stuff."  With the help of all of his friends he gets his own playlist of all of his favorite Christmas songs on his very own ipod.

According to Mrs. Kammerer, Prairie View music instructor, the students did a great job. She and her students would like to thank all of the teachers and administration for all of their help!

Santa and Mrs. Claus, also known as Trevor Edwards and Addison Johnson, and the cast of "Santa's Holiday Playlist" wish everyone Merry Christmas.
